Even Fincher in "House of Cards" is doing the SMS text graphic thing... I'm not sure if I can give him a pass on this one.

I'm not a fan of random graphics popping up out of the blue unless it's stylistically integrated throughout a film... but now Fincher goes and does it in his drama "House of Cards." Fincher is really testing my loyalty.

Why not. We really don't need to have a shot of the phone for ever sms/communication sent on screen.

The last 2 feature films I shot as a DP, the director wanted to do chat bubbles which I opposed. Those were comedies so when one of them screened at SXSW this year, the audience responded well to the "cute" graphics. "House of Cards" is more a drama and while Kevin Spacey's character breaks the 4th wall by narrating into the camera, I still find the "cute" graphics pulls me out of the movie. Now later in the series you'll notice that guest directors like Joel Schumacher completely abandon the graphics in favor of phone shots and his episode is one of the better in the series (for more than one reason, but a good example nonetheless).
